I cant remember when I built this little truck, it was made from old parquet flooring, which I beleive to be Rhodesian Teak. I have been building wooden toys for many years, I think it is time to share some of my experience and learn from other model and toy makers from around the world. The plans for this truck will be available for download soon

A first for Earwigoagin; I put a keelboat up on the header photo. This is a 30 square meter, a type also commonly referred to as a Skerry Cruiser, and to my eye, the various square meter sizes are the prettiest of yachts with long, long, overhangs, low freeboard, and efficient rigs. (I have always found large overlapping jibs to be photogenic.)
Alden Smith put a comment up about this photo and. in reply I realized I didnt know the history of the square meter rule. So a quick tour around the Internet turned up a couple of factoids.
The rule originated in Sweden in 1907 as a reaction to the perceived rigidity of the International Meter rule. The current rule, administered by the Swedish Classification Board, traces back to 1925 with some tweaks along the way.
It is based on a sail area rule, the square meter is the sail measurement of the class though this is somewhat deceiving as only 85% of the jib foretriangle is measured, hence the extreme overlapping jibs to get free sail area.
There were a bunch of classes from 15 sq. m. up to 150 sq. m. but the two that survive in some numbers today are the 22 sq. m. and the 30 sq. m..
If you want to dig in deeper, as usual, the best place to start is the Wikipedia page.
There was a good number of 22 sq. m.s that were either imported or were built in the United States and several years ago I came across one being restored in Annapolis. Unfortunately Ive forgotten who the owner was.
Sea State Marine, out of Missouri, of all places, (their blog is part of my blog list) is in the process of restoring a 1929 sq. m. Kippis, a Skerry Cruiser that was sitting in a barn in Missouri. Some, but not all, of Sea State Marines blog posts on the 22 sq. m. rebuild can be found here.

At long last, I have started the second layer of hull planking. Cutting the thin strips of timber presented quite a few challenges, namely the risk of trimming off the tips of ones fingers, beleive me I know all about this as I have had the misfortune to trim off the tips of both my middle fingers, my left on my table saw about 12 years ago and the right about four months ago on the radial arm saw. I overcame this challenge by building a very simple jig to firmly hold the timber while cutting, it works rather well reducing the risk of serious injury, as some of you might know a radial arm saw can be extreemly dangerous. The radial arm saw I own was purchased from a gent who lost four fingers with the saw, his misfortune induced an urgent sale of the machine, greatly reducing his interest in wood working machinery.

Last summer I took a look at my very old, seldom used dry suit and decided it was time to toss it. I havent sailed frostbite in dinghies in decades and the rather laborious task of replacing dry-rotted seals just wasnt worth it. I guess Ive reached the point where Im quite happy watching other dinghy sailors sail in freezing water, even if I have to suffer being a very cold spectator myself.
Here is a well done video of a cold, cold regatta, an intercollegiate regatta in 420s, shot in slow motion by a professional videographer, Doug Jensen. This video was shot in New England in March; a time when the air temperature may be on the way up but the water is still just a tad above freezing. Brrr!

Another 420 slow motion video in a post on Earwigoagin -plus some comments.

I guess it is to be expected when Christianity decided to shoehorn their most important celebration into the same time frame as the pagan bacchanalia of Winter Solstice. Which brings me to Krampus.
I first learned of Krampus by reading the back of a beer bottle, specifically the back of Southern Tiers Krampus brew (it is sometimes very informative to read the backs of beer bottles). Krampus was the draconian Austrian version of St. Nicks (Santa Clauss) enforcer - if you were a good girl or boy you received the beneficence of St. Nick - however, if you were bad girl or boy you were pursued to the ends of the earth by a horrific, horned creature, Krampus. The story varied as to the punishment meted out by Krampus - the worst was capture by Krampus, collection into a hamper borne on Krampuss back, and then whisked off, never to be seen again on this mortal earth. Wow! that is one over-the-top tale to scare the bejeezus out of the younguns.
From Wikipedia, the origin of Krampus as explained by Maurice Bruce;
"There seems to be little doubt as to his true identity for, in no other form is the full regalia of the Horned God of the Witches so well preserved."
Here is actor Christoph Waltz (never seen Christoph in a movie - I dont watch many movies but Christoph was in a Tarantino movie which makes it even less likely - Tarantino movies have too much mindless blood, guts and gore for me) explaining Krampus on the Jimmy Fallon show.
The Austrians have revived the tradition of Krampus. There is now a Krampuslauf - or Krampus Run (or in Americanese, the time when a drunk biker gang took over your town- sans bikes). In many alpine towns in Austria and Bavaria in early December men put on costumes of the various permutations of Krampus and transform into the nasty, scary Krampus persona, attacking parade spectators and giving young children nightmares weeks out.
The New York Times did this video on the Krampuslauf, as well as highlighting the passion and skill of a wood carver who makes the wooden, gargoyle-like, Krampus masks.
Wishing all of Earwigoagins readers, happy holidays, happy Winter Solstice, or happy whatever way you celebrate the end of the year and the beginning of a new one. I just hope youve been just good enough to avoid a visit from Krampus this year.

Why on earth would you hoist up a bunch of twisted bed sheets, snaked through each other, suspended from somewhere up the mast of a traditional yacht at anchor? That was my question as I started to watch this video and then it got very interesting....
