Plywood Boat Plans Australia | Classic Moth Tweezer D Before the Start

Plywood Boat Plans Australia

In the course of a discussion of sails among the local Classic Moth fleet, I went back and pulled out a photo of the blogmeister just chillin before a start at the 2006 E-City Nationals. This is my all varnished Tweezer D design. My outfit here is kinda conservative. As some readers may remember, I have always had an affinity for natty looking sailing gear.

I cant remember who took the photo. This may be one of Elisabeth or Ingrid Albaughs photos.

Boat Plans Aluminum | Edensaw Boatbuilding Competition A Sailing Dinghy Wins!

Boat Plans Aluminum

Most wooden boat shows have live boatbuilding; usually it involves a group of families assembling a quantity of small rowing skiffs which are then launched at the end of the weekend. At the Wooden Boat Festival hosted by the Northwest Maritime Center in Port Townshend, Washington, Edensaw Woods sponsors a boatbuilding competition where they move away from the typical novice boatbuilding event and open it up to a diverse group of boats from professional designers and being built by skilled woodworkers. In this years competition, built alongside the traditional dory and Irish curragh were two sailing dinghies. One of them, Richard Woods Zest singlehander, won the competition

Here are two of the boats on the beach after the time-limit for boatbuilding expired, ending all construction. On the left was a dory built only with hand tools. On the right is a 14 foot, V-sectioned sailing dinghy designed by sometime Classic Mothist, Stephen Ditmore. As the photo reveals, Ditmores team got the hull done over the weekend but the decking and rigging awaits.

Winner of the competition, designer Richard Woods on board at the initial push-off of his Zest dinghy. This is definitely a racing singlehander with hiking wings. (The hull is a relatively narrow, flat bottom shape.) The hull was completed by the team over the weekend and Richard was able to scavenge sailing parts from some of his other projects to get this design sailing in short order. I think the pushee in the photo is Michael Scott who owns several sailing dinghies including a couple of Classic International 14s and who is constantly feeding news tidbits to the blogmeister.

Instead of painting over the freshly applied epoxy, the Richard Woods team decided to apply a silver vinyl decal material over the hull (purchased at an auto supply store). Very distinctive, hence the boats name Silver Bullet.

Designer of the other sailing dinghy at the competition, Stephen Ditmore sailing his Classic Moth design. Unfortunately we have only seen his Moth show up once at Brigantine, New Jersey.

Wooden Boat Plans Australia | The i550 and the Chesapeake Challenge

Wooden Boat Plans Australia

Last May I ventured over the Bay Bridge to Kent Island to look at Chesapeake Light Crafts OcoumeFest and also to look at some of the competitors in the inaugural WaterTribes Chesapeake Challenge long-distance along-shore marathon (an offshoot of their Everglades Challenge). They were starting that Sunday morning of the OcoumeFest.

Of particular interest was the 17-foot i550 sport boat specifically built by the Gougeon brothers for these type of events. The race poses several challenges that a modern small sailboat is not normally designed for; low bridges, traversing very shallow water, human propulsion when the wind quits and for those endurance types, the ability to keep going on little-to-no-sleep. It is a race where it is tough for a sailboat to keep up with those machine-like kayakers who maintain a steady, grueling pace.

Bob Ames, John Z and I had an interesting conversation with the two sailors who were piloting the Gougeon i550 sport boat Hot Canary; Joe Frohock, the creator of the Mothmaran, being one of the team.

Click here for the Gougeon article on building the i550 Hot Canary.

Some photos:

The sleeping arrangements - just simple camp-mats laid on the floor under the cuddy cabin.

This is Joe Frohocks life-jacket. The following live on his life jacket during the race. A very sharp serrated knife, electrical tape, a whistle, a mirror, a high-pitched rescue whistle, a waterproof flashlight (and several other items Ive forgotten -I think he also had an EPIRB).

A mast tabernacle so the mast can be quickly pivoted down to get under bridges. It turns out this wasnt quite enough, the freeboard on Hot Canary too high for one of the bridges in the race. They were stuck in front of one low bridge for several hours until the tide went out.

A rudder cassette allows the rudder to be pulled up or "reefed" for shallow water steerage. The mulit-part shock cord assemblage allows the aft part of the cassette to bounce back in case of a hard grounding.

The sideview of the i550 sport boat. The i550 is specifically designed for home-building in plywood and has a flat bottom panel.

The rowing station was a simple carbon plank that sat on the side decks, just behind the lifting daggerboard trunk. Rowing the i550 was not one of the designs strong points. The flare to the i550 sides can be seen at the transom.

Yacht Boat Plans | Header Photo 30 Sq Meter Skerry Cruiser

Yacht Boat Plans

A first for Earwigoagin; I put a keelboat up on the header photo. This is a 30 square meter, a type also commonly referred to as a Skerry Cruiser, and to my eye, the various square meter sizes are the prettiest of yachts with long, long, overhangs, low freeboard, and efficient rigs. (I have always found large overlapping jibs to be photogenic.)

Alden Smith put a comment up about this photo and. in reply I realized I didnt know the history of the square meter rule. So a quick tour around the Internet turned up a couple of factoids.
  • The rule originated in Sweden in 1907 as a reaction to the perceived rigidity of the International Meter rule. The current rule, administered by the Swedish Classification Board, traces back to 1925 with some tweaks along the way.
  • It is based on a sail area rule, the square meter is the sail measurement of the class though this is somewhat deceiving as only 85% of the jib foretriangle is measured, hence the extreme overlapping jibs to get free sail area.
  • There were a bunch of classes from 15 sq. m. up to 150 sq. m. but the two that survive in some numbers today are the 22 sq. m. and the 30 sq. m..
  • If you want to dig in deeper, as usual, the best place to start is the Wikipedia page.
There was a good number of 22 sq. m.s that were either imported or were built in the United States and several years ago I came across one being restored in Annapolis. Unfortunately Ive forgotten who the owner was.

Sea State Marine, out of Missouri, of all places, (their blog is part of my blog list) is in the process of restoring a 1929 sq. m. Kippis, a Skerry Cruiser that was sitting in a barn in Missouri. Some, but not all, of Sea State Marines blog posts on the 22 sq. m. rebuild can be found here.

Boat Plans Skiff | The Dinghy Gugh

Boat Plans Skiff

Not sure where this is - maybe one of the Net denizens reading this post can enlighten me - but this video has charm; a seaside row of cottages, repairing a dilapidated sailing dinghy next to a busy pedestrian path, rigging up and then kicking around on a protected bay. The class of dinghy is also a mystery. She looks short, maybe 2.4 meters, with an overhanging boom and a masthead jib - who knows if this is the original rig or something glommed onto the hull? And the name? What is, or who is Gugh?

Update - January 10 - Max from over Bursledon Blog comes up with the place:
"Looks like Christchurch, the row of beach huts by Hengisbury Head. Sailing is inside Christchurch harbour and you can see view of the open sea in Christchurch Bay with the Isle of Wight in the distance.
More about Christchurch from Maxs blog.

Patrick Hay chimes in with a comment and correctly identifies the dinghy as the Bobbin class, length 2.7 meters, beam 1.27 meters, manufactured by Pearson Brothers of England in the 1970s.

More information on the Bobbin can be found over here.

All in all, a very nice piece of both quadcopter and land-based videography.

Yacht Boat Plans | Header Photo Bermuda Fitted Dinghy in the Drink

Yacht Boat Plans

The previous header photo was of a Bermuda Fitted Dinghy on her side. This is the second time I have put the Bermuda Fitted Dinghy up as a header photo. Even though I consider the Bermuda Fitted Dinghy the most photogenic of all dinghy classes, it is obvious that this photo doesnt do justice to the sweet sheer, rounded lines and huge rig of the Fitted Dinghy. But the possibility of capsize is always lurking for the inattentive or for those who sail extremely over-canvassed dinghies, as is the case here. Just part of the fun and this blog takes a perverse delight (since the blogmeister has certainly spent his fair share swimming alongside a dinghy) in featuring photos of capsizes.

Here is a quadcopter video by Andrew Stevenson of the Bermuda Fitted Dinghies racing. (Light winds so no drama.) I cant embed it but you can follow this link to view the video.

Boat Plans And Patterns | Classic Moths in the Mist

Boat Plans And Patterns

At this years Classic Moth Nationals we had a marine layer settle in Saturday night, giving us fog on Sunday morning, a rare event for Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The fog started to creep out towards Pamilco Sound around 9 a.m. and racing commenced, on time, in sunshine.

I took a couple of photos.

The fog didnt stop the sailors kibitzing about Mothboats.

Two transoms in the mist. The Laser transom of the Maser and the wide Europe Dinghy style transom of the Mousetrap Mistral.

The view from the Pughs pier.
